v. saisho san said 最相さん

her hands tell a story
her children never will

and if you look close enough

between her worn cuticles
and wrinkled wrists,
amongst washed-out veins
and skipping tendons,
and especially the silent spaces
between her fingertips

you will find ten thousand years of history
etched underneath her skin

carved in her flesh
so deep, so profound
no amount of moving words
and waving yesterdays in her palms
can fling away the memories

that we,
the children of today
have long forgotten
to remember.
