xii. どこに?

12

the gap between the day
and the night
is a thin white line
the sky is not
hesitant to cross.

at 5.22pm sharp we
descend into a thursday evening,
eyes closed against the
darkening sky.

streetlights snap on
in unison, awaking the birds
that scatter into the
unclouded sky.

amidst the comforting
absence of heat
we walk towards tomorrow,
haltingly feeling the ink
of morning on our fingertips,
shaking away the stains of yesterday.

when the sun rises again
at 6.36am
and it is day
we walk cautiously
back into the
afternoon light,

dragging along everything
yesterday’s travellers left
behind, following telephone lines
to wherever they might lead us,

hopefully
back to twilight once more.
