the fire burned gently
in the cool night,
wind, my sole
we stamp, blow

shining eyes watching light burn
out, dissipating
slowly slowly
into the horizon of streetlights
we watch the glow blend into tarmac
count down in breaths,
5, 4, 3.14
watch the minute spark disappear

my lips curving in a whisper:
dear, dear
my love for you was never here.
teeth and tongue-untwisted
my love, my love,
it never existed.

i turn, black-walk back into the dark once more
don’t look back, headlights in the
distance
don’t look back

don’t
look
back.
